Of your charity please pray for the repose of the soul of Mr John Upton (67). A Member of the Bishop’s Council of Advice and until recently a Lay Reader in the Diocese. John, who attended the Mission of St Mary and St Eanswythe, Dartford, Kent, suffered a serious stroke some time ago, and died at 5.30pm on Thursday 21st July 2011.

His Funeral is to be held at St John’s Church, Erith, Kent on Thursday 25th August at 11am. Commital is to follow at Eltham Crematorium, Crown Woods Way, Eltham, London SE9 2AZ. Although members of the ACC have been invited to attend (in a private capacity) Clergy of the ACC have been denied the opportunity to conduct the funeral which will be conducted by a minister of the Church of England.

John, who was originally from the USA, had for many years lived in SE London working as a teacher. He joined the ACC in America in the year of its formation (1978) but upon arrival in England (where there was then no ACC) attended the Church of England. In the 1990’s when he became aware of the establishment of the Diocese of the United Kingdom Church he attached himself to the Dartford Mission where he remained a staunch supporter.

He was licensed as a Lay Reader in January 2007 although ill health prevented him from fulfilling that ministry. He served various terms on the Bishop’s Council of Advice. He will be much missed.
