The 6th Annual Synod of the Diocese of the United Kingdom was held in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The Diocese has continued to grow during 1996 with new Missions started in Charlton Mackrell, Somerset: Teeside, Middlesborough, Kirwall, Orkney, Scotland and Aberfan, Wales, the Bishop Ordinary, The Right Revd Leslie Hamlett told delegates gathered in the Church of St Willibrord and All Saints.
In addition he reported work was underway in Leeds and in Whitby, N Yorkshire. Building acquired during the year included cemetery Chapels for Our Lady Immaculate and St Oswald, Carlisle, Cumbria and Our Lady and St Hugh, Lincoln, and, most recently, a former Methodist chapel purchased by St David’s, Oswestry.
In other business, the Synod adopted a budget for the Diocese of £8,500
Re-elected from the House of Clergy, The Rev John Appleton and the Very Revd Michael Wright and from the House of Laity, Clive Henchcliffe, to three-year terms on the diocesan Council of Advice. Bishop Hamlett appointed the Rev Charles Johnson and Michael Taylor to one-year terms.
In addition, Bishop Hamlett, appointed the Revd Lawrence Garner, Patricia Johnson and Yvonne Stait to the diocesan Marriage Tribunal.
